A façade that shares a smile with the city.
At the southern entrance of Barcelona, the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona introduces a new dynamic media façade conceived as a luminous expression of optimism and care. More than a digital surface, the intervention transforms the building into a communicative element capable of projecting warmth, imagination, and vitality toward the city. Light becomes a gentle gesture; a way of translating the energy of the children inside into a visible presence that accompanies the urban landscape at night.
The project originated from the intention to rethink an already defined colorful façade and enhance its expressive potential after sunset. Rather than reproducing static chromatic compositions, Artec Studio proposed a dynamic lighting strategy capable of evolving over time. The goal was to move from a decorative approach to a narrative one, where light could convey emotion, playfulness, and life. The façade shifts between calm atmospheres and animated sequences, creating a living canvas that changes subtly throughout the evening.
A grid of digital luminaires transforms the envelope into a low-resolution media surface integrated within the architecture. Instead of acting as an external screen, light is embedded within the façade, maintaining the building’s identity while introducing movement and depth. The system allows transitions between full-color washes, soft gradients, and figurative content inspired by playful and imaginative universes. These sequences were conceived to communicate positivity without overwhelming the environment, balancing visibility with sensitivity.
Technically, the intervention relies on RGBW digital luminaires arranged in a matrix exceeding 12,000 pixels. The lighting system is driven through a show-control platform, enabling dynamic content, smooth transitions, and adaptable programming. This approach expands the façade’s possibilities beyond simple color changes, allowing time-based compositions and seasonal narratives that keep the building visually alive.
During the day, the architecture already communicates a vibrant and welcoming character through color. At night, light amplifies this intention, turning the hospital into a luminous landmark that speaks softly yet clearly. The façade does not seek spectacle, but rather a human presence; a calm, optimistic signal that transforms the perception of the building and contributes positively to the surrounding city.
Light here becomes a quiet form of communication. Through movement, color, and rhythm, the façade expresses vitality and warmth, reinforcing the identity of the hospital as a place centered on care, life, and hope. Visible from the city’s entrance, the building now acts as a luminous presence that accompanies patients, families, and citizens alike, projecting an atmosphere that is both playful and respectful while integrating seamlessly into the urban nightscape.
