Where light brings architecture and nature together.
Located in Mermaid Beach on Australia’s Gold Coast, 272 Hedges Avenue is a residential development designed by Contreras Earl Architecture. The project features a sculptural two-storey podium that forms the base of the tower. This element grounds the vertical volume in the surrounding park and coastal setting, creating a strong dialogue between architecture and landscape.
The lighting design, developed by Artec Studio, plays a central role in expressing the project’s architectural vision. From the outset, light was conceived as an integral layer of the design, one that interacts with geometry, reveals materiality, and shapes the experience of the space. Far from being a secondary element, lighting becomes a narrative thread that connects the organic curves of the architecture with the atmosphere of its coastal context.
Artec Studio’s approach is based on the idea of light as a tool for perception and emotion. By integrating soft, continuous lines of light into the architecture, the studio enhances the flow between surfaces and brings out the depth and texture of the materials. Light and shadow alternate with rhythm and intent, guiding the user and defining transitions without overwhelming the spatial quality.
The result is a lighting strategy that feels intuitive and refined, immersive without being intrusive. It amplifies the sculptural language of the podium and enriches the connection between the building, its users, and its environment.
“"At 272 Hedges Avenue, we approached light as another material within the architecture. It wasn’t just about illumination, but about accompanying the form, revealing texture, and creating an emotional connection with the space. Light had to become part of the building’s language.””
