Evoking the outdoors indoors.
The Parque Duraznos project in Mexico City involved the rehabilitation of a commercial center, transforming it into a space that evokes the feel of an outdoor environment within its interior. The lighting strategy leveraged a large translucent roof to create a nighttime ambiance, simulating a starry sky with randomly placed light points that resemble small constellations.
The central concept was to create an organic, exterior-like space indoors. Bespoke luminaires were designed to enhance this effect, mimicking outdoor lighting fixtures among planters and trees. This approach aimed to make the space feel open and natural, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors.
The architecture of the space included beautiful polished wood friezes or facades, which the lighting project emphasized. This was done by following a concept that emulated facade lighting, continuing the interplay between exterior and interior space.
The distribution of lighting elements, from ceiling to floor, follows an organic pattern rather than rigid architectural lines, reinforcing the theme of a natural, exterior environment. The illuminated trees and planters further contribute to this outdoor illusion, making the interior space feel expansive and integrated with nature.
“By aligning lighting with the architectural rhythm and maximizing the use of existing features, the design creates a cohesive, inviting atmosphere that feels both open and intimate. The overall effect is a pragmatic yet creative solution that blends practicality with a harmonious, organic aesthetic.”
